[ARCHIVED] Fall Fire Hydrant Flushing

The Burlington Municipal Waterworks will begin their annual flushing of city fire hydrants beginning the first week of September and will continue for approximately 5-6 weeks.  During this time residents may experience temporary low pressures or discolored water.  If discolored water is experienced, the Waterworks suggests residents let their cold water run in a sink or bathtub, capable of draining the flow, for up to 20 minutes.  If the problem still persists, please notify the Waterworks Office at 754-6501, or after hours, notify the Water Treatment Plant at 752-7611.  For those customers with a water meter, letting the water run will increase the amount of your bill.  Additionally, customers may notice a slight chlorine odor as the Waterworks will be disinfecting with free chlorine during the flushing process and returning to chloramines for disinfecting when finished.
