[ARCHIVED] Burlington Fire Department responds to apartment fire

Press Release

September 3, 2020

At 5:54 PM Wednesday September 2, 2020 the Burlington Fire Department responded to 206 Locust Street in Burlington for a possible structure fire.  A Burlington police officer in the area arrived first and located smoke coming from apartment 3 in the 11 unit apartment building.  Firefighters arrived within 3 minutes and extinguished a fire located in the living room.  The fire was declared extinguished at 6:09 PM.

The occupant of apartment 3, Marie Wilkerson, was not at home at the time of the fire.  The apartment building, owned by Luke Caston, sustained an estimated $20,000 in damages to the individual apartment and is insured.  The fire was discovered by residents of the apartment building responding to working smoke alarms.  The Red Cross was called to assist the tenant of apartment 3.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation and is not considered suspicious at this time.

Ten Burlington firefighters responded to the call and were assisted by firefighters from West Burlington responding on automatic aid.  The Burlington Police Department and Alliant Energy also assisted at the scene.  Firefighters remained on the scene until 7:49 PM.  There were no injuries and the remaining tenants were allowed to return to their apartments.
