[ARCHIVED] 6/14/19 - Flood Press Release

The floodwaters have receded as the river begins to decline.  As of today the river is at 19ft and the National Weather Service forecasts continued decline.  Much of the water is out of the area, but mud and sediment remain.

Work has started on the Market Street Lift Station.  The lift station’s motors were pulled earlier this week and the lift station will be operational shortly after the motors return.

Staff has assessed the damages in the Depot, Memorial Auditorium, and Port of Burlington.

  • The Depot had approximately 1½ inches of water on the floor from waters seeping through the stone wall.   The City’s insurance adjuster has been through the facility and cleanup has started.
  • The Memorial Auditorium had around 3½ feet of water in the building.  Damages to first floor are significant and include the banquet room, the kitchen equipment, and the risers used for events in the arena.  The arena floor has buckled likely due to humidity.  The City’s insurance adjuster is scheduled to be in the facility next week and cleanup will follow.
  • The Port of Burlington had approximately 2 feet of water in the building.  Damages to the contents of the facility were minimized as the Welcome Center had raised most items.  The City’s insurance adjuster is scheduled to be in the facility next week and cleanup will follow.

Other losses of note are three 6” trash pumps, a 4” electric pump, a pickup of a staff member, and a forklift.

Removal of Hesco barriers and sand bags has started and will continue as the river recedes.
