EDUCATION: Applicant’s educational qualifications shall be such as to enable him or her to properly perform the duties of the position. Minimum, high school graduate or a GED required. CHARACTER: Applicant must possess a character that is above reproach. Extensive background investigations are conducted. Good moral character includes being trustworthy, and an Applicant should be considered by those that know him or her to be a person of good reputation with good standing in the community. If conduct is known or discovered that would discredit the Applicant as a reserve officer, the Applicant will not be appointed. The character of a person is determined by past behavior with many factors being relevant in this assessment. The Department seeks Applicants whose history shows good judgment, maturity, sense of responsibility, and respect for others. The following are grounds for automatic disqualification of a Reserve Officer Applicant. 1) A conviction of a felony. 2) A conviction of other less serious offenses will be evaluated on severity, frequency, and circumstances. 3) A consistent pattern of unexplained failures to meet debt obligations. 4) An Applicant who gives false information on the Police Reserve Application or during the application process. 5) History of extensive use of alcohol. 6) History of extensive use of illegal drugs. RESERVE OFFICER APPLICATION AND APPROVAL PROCESS 1. Complete a City of Burlington Application for Employment, available by contacting City Personnel Director Bev Hunter. Applications may be picked up at City Hall, 400 Washington Street, Burlington, IA 52601, or downloaded from the City of Burlington web site. 2. Complete a physical qualification test, meeting standards set by the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy in the following areas: a) Sit and Reach b) One Minute Sit-Up c) One Minute Push-Up d) One Mile and a Half Run. If a reserve applicant wishes to act in a limited, non-patrol capacity, the position must be available and approved by the Chief of Police. 3. Complete an oral interview conducted by five person committee. 4. Receive a satisfactory background investigation from law enforcement personnel 5. Receive approval by reserve unit 6. Receive approval of the Chief of Police |
