THE BURLINGTON, IOWA CITY COUNCIL

Special Meeting No. 8

March 12, 2001

The Burlington City Council met in special session at 6:00 p.m. with Mayor Scott, Council Members Edwards, Kellogg and Wehrle present. Council Member Thomas was absent.

SPECIAL MEETING NOTICE ACKNOWLEDGED

RESOLUTION:

1. Resolution Adopting the Budget for Fiscal Year Ending June 30, 2002.

DISCUSSION: The City Manager stated that there were several changes to the budget since the public hearing on March 5, 2001. He stated that four additional cuts were made to the budget to lower the tax rate increase from $.41 per thousand dollar valuation to $.35. He further stated that the four additional cuts totaled $36,000.00. Council Member Wehrle commended the City Manager and the Deputy City Manager for their work on the budget. Council Member Edwards stated that while he was not jumping for joy concerning the lower tax increase he was concerned for next year's budget. He stated that he was committed to keeping the budget at a bare minimum. Mayor Scott read a note from Council Member Thomas that he was pleased that City staff had reduced the tax rate and would have voted in favor of approving the budget had he was able to attend the special meeting. Mayor Scott also congratulated the City Manager and Deputy City Manager for holding the line on taxes. He stated that the 2001-2002 tax rate was the biggest increase since he has served on the Council. He also stated concern for next year's budget and urged the City Manager to evaluate every City position without making any drastic cut in City services. All present had opportunity to speak and nothing additional was filed in the office of the City Clerk.
