THE BURLINGTON, IOWA, CITY COUNCIL

Special Meeting No. 1

January 2, 1998

The Burlington City Council met in special session at 9:00 a.m. with former Mayor Sandell, Mayor Scott, Council Members Edwards, Henry, Thomas, and Wright present. Council Member Heland was absent.

SPECIAL MEETING NOTICE ACKNOWLEDGED

STATEMENT BY MAYOR PRO-TEM HENRY: To Swear in New Council Members (By City Clerk)

Council Members Edwards, Thomas, and Wright were sworn in as Council Members by the City Clerk.

NOMINATIONS FOR MAYOR: By Mayor Pro-Tem Don Henry

Council Member Thomas nominated Council Member Scott for Mayor, seconded by Council Member Wright.

MOTION: That nominations for Mayor be closed

DISCUSSION: None.

(VOTE: 5 - "AYES") CARRIED

MOTION: To approve Mayor for two year term

DISCUSSION: None.

(VOTE: 5 - "AYES") CARRIED

SWEARING-IN MAYOR: (by City Clerk)

Council Member Scott was elected and sworn in as Mayor by the City Clerk for a two year term.

NOMINATIONS FOR MAYOR PRO-TEM: By Mayor

Council Member Wright nominated Council Member Thomas for Mayor Pro-Tem, seconded by Council Member Scott.

MOTION: That nominations for Mayor Pro-Tem be closed

(VOTE: 5 - "AYES") CARRIED

MOTION: To approve Mayor Pro-Tem for two year term

SWEARING-IN MAYOR PRO-TEM: (by City Clerk)

Council Member Thomas was elected and sworn in as Mayor Pro-Tem by the City Clerk for a two year term.

STATEMENTS: By new Mayor and Mayor Pro-Tem

DISCUSSION: Mayor Scott stated that he was here to serve the people of Burlington. Mayor Pro-Tem Thomas echoed Mayor Scott's comment. He stated that it was quite an honor to be selected Mayor Pro-tem from his peers. He stated that he would hold the office in high esteem. All present had opportunity to speak and nothing additional was filed in the office of the City Clerk.

STATEMENTS: By full council

DISCUSSION: Council Member Wright thanked his wife, Christine, and his son, Billy for their work during his campaign. He also thanked Tina Stewart, his campaign chairperson, and the people of Burlington who supported him. He stated that he would do his best. Council Member Edwards thanked everyone who supported him during his campaign and those who have continued to support him after his recent arrest. He stated that he wanted the public to know that he has abstained from alcohol since the incident and would continue to abstain from alcohol. He further stated that he would do his best for the citizens of Burlington and would be fair and open minded. All present had opportunity to speak and nothing additional was filed in the office of the City Clerk.
