THE BURLINGTON, IOWA, CITY COUNCIL

Special Meeting No. 34

August 11, 1997

The Burlington City Council met in special session at 4:15 p.m. with Mayor Sandell, Council Members Heland, Henry, Scott and Thomas, present.

SPECIAL MEETING NOTICE ACKNOWLEDGED

MOTIONS:

1. Motion to go into Executive Session for the purpose of: To discuss the purchase of particular real estate only where premature disclosure could be reasonably expected to increase the price the governmental body would have to pay for that property as per State Code, Chapter 21.5.1(j).

(VOTE: 5 - "AYES") CARRIED

2. Motion that the Executive Session be adjourned, and the Council go back into Special Meeting.

DISCUSSION: None.

(VOTE: 5 - "AYES") CARRIED

RESOLUTION:

1. Resolution Awarding Contract for the 1997-1998 East-West Arterial (Mason Road)

DISCUSSION: The City Manager stated that the City received four bids for the 1997-1998 East-West Arterial (Mason Road) Project. She stated that the Public Works Director was recommending the award to Shipley Contracting in the amount of $721,844.75. She stated that the amount was over what was budgeted for phase I of the project. The Public Works Director stated that the budget for phase I was $563,000.00. He stated that the total budget was $2,403,000.00. He stated that the Engineer's estimate for phase I was $720,000.000, which was indicated at the public hearing, and includes some storm sewer work to be utilized in phase II. He stated that he did not anticipate exceeding the total budgeted amount for phase I plus phase II. He stated that construction on the storm sewer would commence in approximately three weeks. He stated that phase I would be completed by late fall, 1997. Council Member Scott stated that Leebrick, between Mason and Barret was very narrow. He questioned if it would be possible to make the street one-way north. The City Manager stated that the Public Works Director would take at look at the street and make a recommendation to the Council at a later date in regard to making Leebrick, between Mason and Barret, a one-way street. All present had opportunity to speak and nothing additional was filed in the office of the City Clerk.
