COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT

- ENVIRONMENTAL NUISANCE -

Home Staff Applications Code

Planning/Zoning Building/Inspection Rentals Nuisance

Environmental Nuisance began under the direction of the Des Moines County Health Department.  In the early 1990's, the City of Burlington expanded their Environmental Code in an effort to further maintain a positive image for the community and enforce cleanup of neglected and badly maintained properties.  Two environmental nuisance positions were created at the time and are still maintained today.
nuisance The Environmental Nuisance Department enforces regulations on the following:
   1.  Tall Vegetation and Noxious Weeds
   2.  Unkempt Trash and Garbage
   3.
Abandoned and Nonconforming Vehicles on Private Property
   4.  Other Valid Environmental Nuisances
Nuisance Inspectors respond to calls on a daily basis.  Violators are given a certain period of time to correct any violations or the property nuisance will be abated by the City and charged back to a property's taxes.  Primarily working on a complaint basis, environmental nuisance inspectors respond to a variety of complaints.  These complaints may be given directly to the inspectors or they can be handed over from another City office or department.

If you have a questions as to what constitutes a nuisance or wish to report a nuisance, please call a
Property Maintenance (Nuisance) Inspector.

Clean Up Burlington - C.U.B. Program

The Environmental Nuisance division began the C.U.B. program in 2007 under the direction of Joe Stewart, Program Coordinator. This program (
Clean Up Burlington) developed a working relationship between
between the City of Burlington and Community Based Corrections through the 8th Judicial District in Burlington in an effort to maintain unattended areas of right-of-way and public property within the City of Burlington. The program allows residents of the Community Based Corrections facility to assist in the maintenance and clean-up of these public areas in order to enhance and maintain their quality appearance and the overall appearance of the community.
