VISION IOWA
Burlington Public Library

From its small beginning as a book lending institution over 125 years ago, the Burlington Public Library has grown to serve area citizens with computerized services, telephone queries, and non-print materials in addition to the lending of books and magazines.  In October 2004, the Library Board of Directors broke ground for the current current library building at 210 Court Street and the newly constructed library opened November 2006.
Burlington Bees - Community Field

The Burlington Bees are the Class A minor league affillitate of the Kansas City Royals and are in the Midwest League.  Professional baseball in Burlington, Iowa dates back to 1889.  Community Field, home of the Burlington Bees, was built on its current site in 1947 and renovated through the Vision Iowa project in 2005.
Burlington Memorial Auditorium

Burlington's Memorial Auditorium, located next to the Mississippi River, was opened to the public in 1939. The Auditorium was built by the Works Project Administration and first used as a U.S. Naval Reserve Training Center, and by the supply company of the 136th Medical Regiment of the Iowa National Guard.  The  renovation of the auditorium, including the expansion of the stage and dressing room areas will enhance the use of the building for concerts, shows, conventions, receptions, and many other uses.  Renovation was completed in Fall 2007.
Flint River Recreation Trail

The Flint River Recreation Trail will be approximately 21 miles long and will run from downtown Burlington (Port of Burlingon), through Starr's Cave Park and Preserve, to Big Hollow Recreation Center, located north of Burlington in Des Moines County.  This will be the longest trail in southeast Iowa and will provide excellent opportunities for walking, biking, sight seeing, etc.  Fund-raising and project preparation are ongoing at this time.  Initial trail construction is slated to start Spring 2008.
Des Moines County Historical Museum

The Des Moines County Historical Society in Burlington is preparing the former public library for adaptive reuse as a historical museum.  Respecting the historic structure must remain paramount while resolving code issues, improving environmental controls, and developing functional, efficient plans.  The project provides for expanded exhibit and storage space and proper artifact conservation.  Construction and renovation on the museum is projected to begin Fall / Winter 2007.
Big Hollow Recreation Area

Through this project, a 178-acre lake, 1.8 miles long, and an average of 1/4 mile wide will be created with the construction of a dam.  The new Big Hollow will also have swimming beaches, camping and cabins, biking and hiking trails, boating, fishing, and more.  Work is ongoing for this project.
