funding allows the City to complete projects at a reduced cost to the
community. Many projects may not have been completed without the
assistance of the grants that were received below. |
| Regional Transportation Enhancement Grant - (Awarded 2008) The City of Burlington and Des Moines County were awarded a joint grant in the amount of $164,685. This grant is to be split evenly between the two entities for construction of the Flint River Trail. This grant is administered by the Iowa DOT. |
| Homeownership Assistance Program, HOME Grant - (Awarded 2008) Christian Action, in partnership with
Burlington Housing Partnership, Low Rent Housing of Burlington, and the City of Burlington were awarded $288,189 to assist eleven (11) first-time homebuyers to purchase and
rehabilitate homes. This grant is
awarded through the Iowa Department of Economic Development (IDED). A state HOME Grant was also awarded to this partnership in 1997, 2000, and 2003 and successfully completed. In total, approximately 33
single-family properties have been rehabilitated through this program and $761,000
of HOME grant funds have been invested in the community. |
| Federal Recreation Trails Grant - (Awarded 2008) The City of Burlington and Des Moines County were awarded a joint
grant in the amount of $220,020. This grant is to be split evenly between the two entities and will be utilized for
trail construction of the Flint River Trail from Starr's Cave
Nature Center in the county to the Flint River
railroad bridge, located north of the Case manufacturing
plant in the city. This grant is administered by the Iowa DOT.

| REAP Grant -
(Awarded 2007) The City of Burlington was awarded a grant in the amount
of $150,000 to be used towards the acquisition and development of
the Flint River Trail. This grant requires no local match. This trail is to be approximately 21 miles long and will run from downtown
Burlington (Port of Burlington) to the Big Hollow Recreation Center, located
north of Burlington in Des Moines County. The REAP (Resource, Enhancement and Protection) Grant is funded through the Iowa DNR. |
| Keep Iowa Beautiful Grant - (Awarded 2007) The City of Burlington was awarded $890 from Keep Iowa Beautiful for use with the CUB (Clean Up Burlington) Program. This program, maintained through the Environmental Nuisance Division, helps
to maintain public right-of-way, eliminate environmental nuisances, and
preserve the natural beauty of Burlington. The CUB Program was
also awarded a $250 private donation in 2007. |
| Safe Routes to School Grant - (Awarded 2007) The City of Burlington and the Burlington Community School District
were awarded $143,603 for use in improving pedestrian and bicycles
routes to local schools; this grant covers 100% of the project cost. This project was supported by the local
Safe Routes to School Task Force and funded intersection improvements
near Grimes Elementary School along with a traffic speed indicator;
construction of sidewalks along Cliff Road to Sunnyside Avenue
(Sunnyside Elementary School); as well as educational programs with
walking coordinators to encourage children to walk to school.
This Iowa DOT
program is intended to provide funds for projects that improve
opportunities for children to walk and bike to school, while reducing
childhood obesity, traffic congestion, and pollution. |
| Regional Transportation Enhancement Grant - (Awarded 2006) The City of Burlington was awarded a grant for the connection of existing trail sections surrounding the Burlington Regional RecPlex through the Iowa DOT.
The two phases of this project were awarded a combined total of
$185,040 in grant money. The trail connections totaled one mile
of new trail and connected the existing West Burlington trail and West
Avenue trail to the RecPlex. |
| Vision Iowa Grant - (Awarded 2004) The City of
Burlington was awarded $4,250,000 and Des Moines County was awarded
$1,000,000 for the joint Great River Gateway Project by the Vision Iowa Program. The total project cost is approximately $22,000,000. This project includes
several components designed to enhance cultural and recreational
opportunities in the area. These
include improvements to Community Field (home to the Burlington Bees minor
league baseball team); renovations to Burlington Memorial Auditorium;
construction of a new public library; rehabilitation of the current public
library to become the Des Moines County Historical Center; and major
enhancements to the Big Hollow Recreation Area. |
