On behalf of the City Council I would like to welcome you to the City of Burlington’s website. I am pleased to introduce you to Burlington and share some of the things that make Burlington such a great place to visit, live, work and raise a family. Burlington is located in southeast Iowa where U.S. Highways 34 and 61 intersect. We are bordered on the east by the mighty Mississippi River, which provides us with great outdoor recreational opportunities. The riverfront is the scene of our annual Burlington Steamboat Days event. Nearby, in our Downtown district, you will find lots of shopping opportunities and unique gift ideas. Just a few blocks away is Snake Alley, recognized by Ripley’s Believe It or Not as the “Crookedest Street in the World” and home of the annual Snake Alley Criterium bicycle race. For all of you sports enthusiasts, the Burlington Regional Recplex offers batting cages and leagues for softball, as well as soccer, volleyball and other sporting activities. Burlington is also the home of the Bees, a Single-A Midwest League affiliate of the Kansas City Royals. For additional entertainment options you can visit Catfish Bend Casino and Fun City where you can bowl, drive go carts, play video games, laser tag and enjoy the outdoor water park. The City Council is dedicated to making decisions that help the Burlington community grow and prosper. Our focus is on economic development and downtown revitalization. Flint Ridge Business Park offers a centralized location within the city for new business opportunities. We are proud of our varied industrial businesses, many which proudly serve customers worldwide. I think that as a community, one of our most important priorities is to provide a variety of cultural and educational experiences for our citizens. The Burlington Civic Music Association hosts multiple performances each year at Memorial Auditorium, the largest Event Center in Southeast Iowa. Major renovations of the Auditorium were completed in 2007. Also in 2007 we opened the doors to our beautiful new public library facility with state of the art technology and programs for all ages. The previous library building is currently being renovated into a Des Moines County Historical Museum where our rich cultural history will be showcased. New elementary and middle school facilities and renovations are also nearing completion. As you can see there are many exciting things happening in our city. I am pleased to call Burlington my home and to serve the citizens as Mayor. Thank you for visiting our website. We would be pleased to welcome you to our community. |
