The Burlington Police Department historically has operated a K9 program since 1997. The most recent K9 was retired in 2012 and city wide budget restrictions and deficits would not allow for the continuation of the project. The K9 has been utilized for patrol operations, narcotics detection/drug interdiction, tracking lost/missing children or adults, officer protection, and building and article searches for Burlington and the surrounding area. The immediate availability and response time for other K9 handlers in the area prohibits the emergency response and utilization to be less effective than having the K9 already established in our community.
